In the beginning there was grandpa

Once upon a time -or under a time I can't tell- and in a large maple tree an old grandpa ant sat in his rocking chair. "Grandpa tell me a story" asked a grand-ant. "Ya! I want a story too." clamored another. The grandfather ant teased them for a while then agreed and soon all the kiddos were in their PJs, gathered around and quieted down. This is how The Story of an Old Ant begins, from the simple request of a young ant and the memories of an old one.
This is how it went, "I don't quite know when it happened but I do remember waking up in a lab. I don't know how I knew it was a lab or why I woke up but I did. I looked around and saw glass tubes full of vile liquids and terrible powders, I saw full grown humans too in masks and long robes." All the little ants huddled closer. "I then realized I wasn't alone, I looked to the left and saw tiny cubes with ants in them. I looked to the right and saw the same. I glanced up then looked down and all I could see was glass cubes with ants just like me. And every single one of us in a crudely fashioned cube.
Why was I here? And why were the others here... That will have to wait till next time."
"Hey!" exclaimed the smallest ant, "that won't do!" and all the ants started whining. The grandfather ant grinned and said, "fooled ya!" the ants giggled then settled back down to listen some more -after some goading from mom ant.
Grandfather ant then started again...
